Girl Rising

Article for TAG Magazine

A new award-winning documentary, “Girl Rising,” is coming to Springfield this June with the help of three women from the travel blog 3GirlsAndAMap.com.

“When we realized it wasn’t showing in a theater where our friends and family could see it, we decided to spread the cause to the Springfield area,” said Tammi Presley, one of the co-founders of the blog and a former Springfield native. “Springfield has a lot of college campuses and we are hoping to inspire the next generation of females to help spread the word. Women can bring powerful change and we wanted to bring that message to our community,” she said.

The film is to be shown on June 6, 2013 at 7:30 PM in the Wherenberg Campbell 16 movie theatre. For reserving tickets visit GATHR.us/screening/3918 through May 22, 2013. One-hundred tickets must be reserved to ensure the viewing, so reserve away!

“Girl Rising” captures the spirit of nine young girls born into unforgivable circumstances and their drive for a better life. The documentary shows the importance of education for young women across the world.

“When you educate a girl you can break cycles of poverty in just one generation. Educating a girl not only changes the lives of the girl but also the community, the country and the world,” Presley said.

Unveiled at the 2012 Sundance Festival, “Girl Rising” includes the voice talents of Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Cate Blanchett and Liam Neeson. Academy-award winning director Richard E. Robbin directed the film.

The documentary was created by the 10×10 campaign to bring awareness of the importance of education for young girls. It was founded by award-winning journalists at The Documentary Group and Paul G. Allen’s Vulcan Productions. By joining with GATHR, a web-based tool that helps people bring documentaries to their hometowns, “Girl Rising” has been able to reserve over 100,000 tickets throughout the US.

“This campaign is important to us because we have been very fortunate in our lives. We currently have the opportunity to travel around the world and we thought why not try to change things for the better while we do it? We recognized the opportunity we held by using our travel blog as a platform to help bring awareness to the campaign as well as the film,” Presley said.

3 Girls And A Map are Tammi Presley, Tiffany Butler, and Michelle Hudson. You can view the trailer for “Girl Rising” here.
